Symptoms and Challenges

Here are some of the common symptoms and challenges I help face!

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity

Disorder (ADHD):

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. People with ADHD often struggle with paying attention, controlling impulsivity, and may be hyperactive. It can impact various aspects of life, such as academics, work, and relationships.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal and common emotion that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. It is often characterized by feelings of worry, fear, and unease. However, when anxiety becomes persistent, excessive, and interferes with daily life, it may be considered an anxiety disorder.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings. People with bipolar disorder experience episodes of mania and depression, which can vary in intensity and duration.

Chronic  Pain/Illness

Chronic pain is persistent or long-lasting pain beyond the normal and/or expected healing period after an injury or procedure (typically beyond 3 months). Additionally, chronic pain could appear to have come out of nowhere with no medical explanation. Similarly, chronic illness is a long-term health condition that lasts for an extended period of time.  Living with chronic pain and chronic illness can have a significant impact on a person’s physical and mental well-being. It may lead to limitations in daily activities, disrupt sleep, cause fatigue, and contribute to feelings of frustration, stress, and depression.

Depression

Depression is a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, and a range of physical and emotional symptoms. It goes beyond normal feelings of sadness or grief and tends to last for extended periods of time, often interfering with daily functioning and overall well-being.

Grief

Grief is a complex and natural response to a loss. It is a normal reaction to experiencing the death of a loved one, but it can also be triggered by other types of losses, such as the end of a relationship, a job loss, or major life change. Grief encompasses a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, and disbelief. It can also affect a person’s thoughts, behaviors, and physical well-being. Prolonged grief is a more intense and persistent form of grief that extends beyond what is considered to be a “normal” grieving process. It can impact a person’s ability to function and maintain their regular routine.

Self Esteem

Self-esteem issues refer to a person’s feelings or attitudes towards themselves, which can be negative or low. Individuals with self esteem issues often have a poor self-image, lack confidence in their abilities, and may doubt their worth or value as a person. These feelings can be pervasive and impact various aspects of a person’s life, including relationships, work, and overall well-being.

Sleep Issues/Nightmares

Sleep disturbance refers to any disruption or difficulty that interferes with a person’s ability to get adequate and restful sleep. It can manifest in several ways and impact both the quality and quantity of sleep. Sleep disturbances can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, anxiety, depression, certain medications, medical conditions, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors. It is important to address sleep disturbances, as inadequate sleep can have negative effects on overall health, mood, cognitive function, and daily functioning.

Stress

Stress is a natural response that our bodies and minds experience when we encounter challenging or demanding situations. It is our body’s way of preparing us to respond to potential threats or pressures in our environment. Adverse events, such as work deadlines, relationship difficulties, financial problems, or major life changes, can trigger stress. Stress triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can lead to physical, mental, and emotional changes. While stress is a normal part of life, prolonged or excessive stress can have negative effects on our well-being. Chronic stress can contribute to health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, weakened immune system, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Managing stress is crucial for maintaining overall well-being.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma is a distressing or deeply disturbing event or series of events that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. It can result from various experiences such as natural disasters, accidents, physical or sexual assault, violence, war, or the sudden loss of loved ones. Traumatic events can have a significant impact on a person’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop as a result of experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event.  PTSD can significantly impair a person’s daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. It is important to note that not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, and the severity and duration of symptoms can vary among individuals.

Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a type of injury caused by a forceful impact or jolt to the head or body that results in damage to the brain. TBIs can range from mild to severe, depending on the extent of damage and the symptoms experienced. Common causes of traumatic brain injuries include falls, car accidents, and sports-related injuries, assaults, and workplace accidents to include military related experiences. The symptoms of traumatic brain injury can vary depending on the severity and location of the injury. In more severe cases, TBIs can cause long-term or permanent disabilities, including cognitive impairments, difficulty with movement or coordination, speech problems, changes in personality or behavior, and seizures.
